Thanks to our dear Kimberly, this Friday from 8 to 11 pm HGSA will join forces with the Spanish American Law Student Association (SALSA), the Hispanic American Medical Student Association (HAMSA) and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA)and celebrate a
social at Fat Tuesday's. There will be drink specials ($3
daiquiris and wells, etc.) and a NY band playing. The admission will be $5, but I promise next time it will be free. This is the first time that 4 grad/professional hispanic organizations meet, so you can't miss it!!!

FREE Hispanic Concert this Sunday

The annual Hispanic Heritage Month concert featuring Sonora
Carruseles along with reggaeton and vallenato guest artists is
this Sunday, November 19th at the Phillips Center for the
Performing Arts (CPA). Doors open at 6pm and the show begins at
6:30pm. You can get your free tickets at the CPA or UBO box
office.

Today Monday August 14, we participated in the New Graduate Student Orientation, put together by the Graduate Student Council. It was held in the second floor of the J.Wayne Reitz Union. Nuestros vecinos fueron las damas del Black Graduate Student Organization (BGSO). La BGSO tendrá una bienvenida a estudiantes también, y les enviaremos detalles de la misma. Se reunirán en el Institute of Black Culture, en la intersección de la 15 St y University Ave, cerca del Chipotle Restaurant, y La Casita (el Institute of Hispanic and Latino Cultures).

Our tabling neighbors were the ladies from the Black Graduate Student Organization. They will also be having a welcoming event and we shall send you the details of the event. They will meet at the Institute of Black Culture, at the intersection of 15th St and University Ave, near to Chipotle Restaurant and La Casita (the Institute of Hispanic/Latino Cultures).

La senadora Cecilia tambien es funcionaria electa representa a los estudiantes graduados en el Senado Estudiantil. El Senado es la rama legislativa del gobierno estudiantil y es un organismo bien colorido. Los representantes del Senado estuvieron presentes en la orientación y probablemente saludando a los estudiantes nuevos.

Senator Cecilia is also an elected official representing graduate student in the Student Senate. The Senate is the legislative branch of Student Government and it is a very colorful body. The representatives from the Senate were present at the orientation, and presumably mingling with new students.

McKNIGHT DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

We just found out that the McKnight program is now accepting applications from Latino/Hispanic students who are pursuing a Ph.D. They have 7 openings that they need to fill ASAP! Do you know of anyone who is starting their Ph.D. in the Fall that needs funding. This is a fantastic program.

McKNIGHT DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

Funded by outside support, the McKnight Doctoral Fellowships are traditionally awarded to African-American students newly admitted to select doctoral programs at institutions in the State of Florida's university system. It includes a stipend of $12,000 funded for a maximum of five years. Applicants must be US citizens. SHPE Soccer Tournament

Anyone interested in forming a soccer team to play in the SHPE (Society
of Hispanic Professional Engineers) soccer intramurals? I think it

Hi Pedro,

I am so excited to hear that the Hispanic Graduate Student
Association is interested in forming a team. This is a fund
raising event where all proceeds will go to a scholarship we
formed for incoming freshmen to the college of engineering from
the city of Gainesville.

To register a team all you have to do is fill out a registration
form which can can either print off our website
(http://grove.ufl.edu/~shpeuf), pick up from our table at the
Reitz Union, or pick up from our office Weil 376. With the
registration form you must turn in the $50 donation which is our
team discount. If you don't have enough for a team, individuals
may pay $10 each. The team deadline is Thursday, February 23. The
individual deadline is walkon, therefore 10:00 am on Saturday,
February 25. We would prefer if they registered before Saturday so
we could better plan for the event.

With registration each individual receives a T-shirt, Goals for
Tomorrow wrist band, and BBQ food provided for lunch. There are
also metals and prize packs from Lockheed Martin for the top three
teams.

Teams consist of 6-8 people. They must be co-ed with a 2:3 gender
ratio. Games will be 5 on 5 and each game will have two ten minute
halves. We will be using intramural rules. The number of games
will depend on the number of teams we have the day of the event.

Internship Development with Gainesville Employers) program might

Gainesville Chamber of Commerce for the purpose of providing

Student Government Elections

The annual Student Government Spring elections are almost upon us. Voting will take place on February 28 and March 1 8am to 8pm. Results will be announced March 1 at 11:59pm at the Orange and Brew. It is important to have every member to come out and vote, to increase the political capital of graduate and professional students. We are a population 15,000 strong, and we can sway the election in any way we want. People should have to come to us for support.

Student Government -- Call For Action!

Hey HGSA!

The Student Government spring 2006 elections are nearly upon us. We will be having elections for the positions of Student Body President, Vice President, Treasurer and half of the Student Senate.

The elections will be held on February 28 and March 1 from 8am to 8pm. Run-off elections for executive tickets (if necessary) will be on March 7 and 8, 8am to 8pm.

Students interested in running for the Student Senate should contact Pedro Morales (me, the webmaster) at pedromor@ufl.edu with questions. To become a Student Senator, you must qualify to be on a political party's slate of candidates or run as an independent candidate. Qualifying (or slating) will take place on the dates below:

*February 3 => Qualifying, 9:00-5:00, Room 346 Reitz Union
*February 6 => Qualifying, 9:00-5:00, Room 287 Reitz Union
*February 7 => Qualifying, 9:00-5:00, Room 287 Reitz Union

Check out the SG website for details on requirements for running for an elective position.

Even if you are not interested in running for Senate, it is of utmost importance to come out and vote. Large Graduate student voter turnout creates more political capital for graduate students in Student Government.

I have served for one year as a graduate student member of the Student Senate, and it has been an amazing experience. UF's SG has been amazing in the following:

- Sunday Bus Service:
Bus Service will start circulating in the fall of 2006. The plan has been worked and approved by SG. Students without cars will now be able to go to church, or to the mall, or to campus with the Sunday buses.

- Allocating $12.2 million dollars in Activity and Services (A&S) Fees
This budget funds activities like the Career Resource Center, Gator Nights, student organizations (like HGSA) and Hispanic Heritage Month.

- Campaigned with GAU to eliminate the $50 International Student SEVIS Fee
The SEVIS system was instituted after the terrorist attacks of September 11 to track international student activities on college campuses nationwide. The cost of the system was added to the burden of international students, at $50 a semester. We campaigned for the repeal of this fee, and convinced the UF administration that the fee was unfair.

- Working to select a better health plan for graduate students
Many people are complaining about the Scarborough insurace plans, and SG is actively working to find new, better contracts that provide better health care to graduate students.

Campus Visitation Program Mixer and Dinner

The Campus Visitation Program (CVP) is a week of activities geared to introducing potential new minority graduate students to the life at the University of Florida. It is put up by the staff of the Office of Graduate and Minority Programs (OGMP).

CVP will be having a welcome mixer on Wednesday Feb 1 afternoon 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the Friends of Music Room, in the University Music Auditorium, by the UF Belltower. This activity is for potential new minority graduate students to come to UF.

Also, the CVP students will be having dinner at Juniors on Friday night if any of the HGSA students can attend from 7 - 8 p.m.

Welcome to the blog/website of the Hispanic Graduate Student Association at the University of Florida.

Our Mission

HGSA seeks to serve as a cultural, academic and social liasion for graduate students at the University of Florida. Per our name, our goal is to create a home-away-from-home, an environment where Hispanic graduate or professional students can come and interact. However we are open to any UF student and we encourage everyone to come and meet us.

We seek to create and promote activities to enrich our academic and extra-curricular lives. By being a part of UF's Hispanic Student Association we are able to connect with UF's Hispanic community. Our members are also involved in the Graduate Student Council and other important student organizations. Our members come from a wide variety of countries like Puerto Rico, Peru, Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, etc.

Our main goals for the Spring of 2006 is to publish our newsletter: "Nuestra Voz: Our Voice", a bilingual publication that will publish our members' academic abstracts, current events, news clips, and member profiles, among other things. We also seek to promote the career advancement activities provided by the Career Resource Center. Finally, together we can program parties, game nights, happy hours, and other social events.
